Meet the members of the Decade’s Executive Planning Group

“Silent sentinels” deliver their 2 millionth snapshot of our changing oceans

Last month a team of international scientists achieved a major milestone when the Argo program delivered its two millionth profile of physical and chemical data from the world’s oceans, quadrupling the number collected by ships over the previous 100 years. Across the globe, about 4,000 Argo floats continuously collect data on the physical state of the ocean as a part of the Global Ocean Observing System. The program has been revolutionizing physical oceanography and climate science for nearly 20 years.

Microscopic “body-snatchers” and “planktonic-greenhouses” are ubiquitous with contrasting biogeographies and abundance in our oceans

Researchers present innovative study on the biogeography of mixotrophic species of plankton. Plankton are responsible for ~50% of the planet's primary production, and play a core role within the dynamics of nutrition and metabolism in the marine environment.

Nineteen experts from national governments, international NGOs, and scientific institutes gathered at UNESCO from 17-19 December during the first meeting of the Executive Planning Group (EPG) of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
